A member of parliament who sits in the parliamentary budget committee has finally come out to explain the reasons why they imposed heavy taxes on fuel and other petroleum products.
According to the legislator, the country's debt burden is to blame. Faced with the challenges of raising finances for due debt repayments running into billions, the committee was hard at work to come up with sources of revenue to mitigate the same. Therefore, the committee deemed it fit to impose VAT on fuel imports as the only source that the government could raise money from to pay its loans.
However, with the benefit of hindsight, Onyonka now calls on President Uhuru Kenyatta and the treasury to find ways of mitigating the high fuel prices to alleviate the suffering by Kenyans.
