Rare Photo of Nairobi Before The City Had Any Tarmacked Road

A rare photo of Nairobi town before tarmac roads were constructed has surfaced online. This might be during the precolonial periods before Kenya got its independence.

From the photo shared online, the city was still lagging behind in terms of development. Back then it was unpopulated and one could easily cruise around without jostling and bumping into people.

However, currently, the city is congested with people from different walks of life. Basing on the past photo and the current ones, the city has significantly transformed with exceptional buildings.

After independence, Jomo Kenyatta commissioned the construction of Kenyatta International Conference (KICC) building, one of the tallest buildings in the country, in 1967 and was completed after 6 years with Jomo presiding over the opening fete in 1973.

This is how Nairobi got its new look. More projects were initiated by other leaders with president Uhuru Kenyatta focusing on infrastructural developments.

Favorable government policies saw the centralization of industries and offices in Nairobi.
