Kenyan government spokesperson Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna has said that the government is committed to ensure that no Kenyan goes to bed hungry or is adversely affected by hunger. According to Oguna, the national government is closely collaborating with counties to ensure that the two levels of government put necessary measures to avert hunger and starvation.
Additionally, the government spokesperson has said that they have identified at least six counties that are likely to be affected with hunger over the coming months. Therefore, he urged well wishers and development partners to step in and donate food and other basic necessities to avert a possible crisis. The six identified counties are majorly in the arid and semi arid areas of northern Kenya. Oguna say that drought and lack of water will also likely affect livestock and urged the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture to put the necessary safeguards such as buying the stock from farmers.
However, the spokesperson urged farmers across the country to take advantage of the long rains to plant food crops that will help the county fight hunger and starvation. Oguna said that the government will support small scale and larger scale farmers in equal measure to ensure that the country is food secure.
