Somehow, President Uhuru Kenyatta is a good student. For the 20 years or so that he has been in the murky world of politics, the man from Gatundu learnt very fast from his mentor, the late President Daniel Arap Moi.
Though he may not be the "professor of politics" that Moi used to be at the peak of his reign, but somehow, Uhuru is excelling. If "Nyayo" rose from his grave today, he would be very happy with the progress that his protege is making.
In 2018, when Uhuru embraced ODM leader Raila Odinga through the now famous handshake deal, many thought that President's decision was aimed at taming the former Prime Minister.
At some point, Deputy President William Ruto's closest associates like Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, were on record saying that Uhuru will dump Raila when the right time comes. But they are now still waiting for that "right" time!

With just less than a year left to the next general election, Raila has emerged as Uhuru's preferred successor. This is something few people saw coming considering the duo's love-hate political relationship in the past.
Through his foot soldiers, the President has now embarked on a mission to market the ODM chief in Mount Kenya, his key political backyard.
Further, Raila is now the man who always accompanies the Head of State to launch various development projects.

By backing the opposition leader to succeed him, Uhuru has pulled a shock and surprise move that the continent of Africa and perhaps the entire world has never witnessed before.
Just how can a sitting President endorse an opposition candidate to succeed him? By bypassing his own deputy whom he has fallen out with and indeed other heavyweights in his own Jubilee Party, Uhuru's actions will surely be used as a case study in future.
The world is probably watching Uhuru's political game plan keenly. And if it yields good results, this will one day be studied in political science classes.
