The United Nations Security Council Is Unable To Reach An Agreement On The Tigray Situation

After Russia, China, and India agreed that the crisis in Ethiopia's northern Tigray area was an internal affair, the UN Security Council failed to agree on a joint statement. According to the AFP news agency, three African countries on the council - Kenya, Niger, and Tunisia - had backed a draft declaration.

According to the news agency, it would have demanded urgent humanitarian aid and a halt to hostilities while asserting Ethiopia's sovereignty. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had previously stated that there were disturbing reports of ongoing abuses in Tigray that could lead to war crimes. Michelle Bachelet drew attention to cases of sexual and gender-based abuse, as well as extrajudicial executions and widespread devastation. The UN Human Rights Office is requesting access to Ethiopia to investigate allegations of massacres committed by the Ethiopian government. The governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia have previously denied the presence of Eritrean troops in Tigray.
