Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has been applauded by a social rights activist, for demonstrating leadership in the fight against possible spread of the coronavirus in Kisumu County. Joshua Odhiambo Nyamori has applauded the governor for taking a stirring role in sensitizing the masses towards social distancing, and mobilizing the private sector to support response against the pandemic.

The governor has been on the forefront of urging locals to embrace the stay at home advisory and social distancing, through various actions and pronouncements such as shutting down of all open air markets in the Lakeside County.

“I therefore feel obliged to thank Prof. Hon Peter Anyang Nyong’o. Despite the fact that he is facing a higher risk as an individual due to his age and his medical history, he stepped out, took the risk and moved around the City to sensitize the masses and mobilize towards social distancing in the last few days,” Nyamori stated in a facebook post on Friday.

He also praised Market Milimani Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Seth Ochieng Kanga for his timely intervention, which led to the decongestion of the Kisumu main bus park.  “No one believed that the operators at the bus stage could agree to decongest and clean the bus stop. It takes a strong leader to pull various conflicting groups at the bus stop towards one direction. You have demonstrated leadership,” added Nyamori.

is one of the Counties with zero cases of the coronavirus in Kenya so far. Nyamori’s decision to applaud Governor Nyong’o comes exactly a month after he urged Kisumu County MCAs to consider impeaching the first term governor, over what he said was the deteriorating state of the health sector in the County.

“If it will take impeachment of the Prof. Hon Peter Anyang Nyong’o for health systems – the organization of people, institutions, and resources that deliver health care services to meet the health needs of Kisumu County population – to be revitalized, then MCAs should consider it a fundamental duty to move an impeachment motion against the Governor, with speed. It is a duty the MCAs owe to the people, in fidelity to their Oath of Office,” Nyamori said a month ago.

Recently, Nyong’o who served as Kisumu County Senator from 2013 to 2017, appointed himself the interim County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of health and sanitation after he transferred Professor Judith Attyang’ Miguda to the Business, Cooperatives and Marketing docket.
