Kakamega: Does Khalwale Have A Chance Of Winning 2022 Gubernatorial Polls If He Rejoins Mudavadi?

Former Kakamega senator Dr Boni Khalwale has announced his intentions to succeed the incumbent Wycliffe Oparanya in 2022.

It will be his second stab at the gubernatorial seat after Oparanya handed him a humiliating defeat in 2017 polls. He was still in FORD-Kenya party where he had been made its deputy party leader. He used its ticket to challenge the incumbent who was seeking reelection but he was floored by a margin of 243,000 votes. He ganered 139,999 and the governor had 387,999 votes. The latter was running on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

Khalwale Dumped FORD-Kenya For Jubilee In 2018

Immediately after 2017 general election, Dr Khalwale decamped from FORD-Kenya and joined the ruling party Jubilee courtesy of deputy president Dr William Ruto's pursuation. He vowed to support Dr Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

He cited frustration in his bid to unite Luhyia community and their politicians as reason why he quitted Wetangula.

He alleged that Mudavadi and Bungoma senator had refused to team up and produce one presidential candidate in 2022 race.

Earlier on, before Mudavadi formed Amani National Congress (ANC), the former senator together with the ex-vice-president were in the defunct United Democratic Front (UDF) political outfit.

Khalwale Declared His 2022 Gubernatorial Seat In Dp Ruto's Camp

However, when Jubilee experienced serious contentions and subsequent fallout between president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Dr William Ruto, the latter's faction broke away and revamped Party of Development and Reforms (PDR) into United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2020.

Dr Khalwale became interim vice-chairperson of UDA party. He has quipped that he will use it in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

The vocal politician is now DP's pointman in Western Kenya. He has vowed to lock out Raila from the region.

Comparison Between Dp Ruto and Mudavadi's Political Clouts In Western Kenya Ahead Of 2022

In the region, Mudavadi seems to enjoy support from the majority of the locals compared to Dr Ruto. This is because he is among the top Luhyia community defacto politicians.

Nontheless, the DP has been seen to command some following after making several inroads in the region since 2017.

Will Khalwale's Chances Of Winning His 2022 Gubernatorial Bid Be Bolstered If He Was To Rejoin Mudavadi?

The key question is that can Dr Khalwale alias 'Bullfighter' succeed in his ambitions if he returns to Mudavadi's team?

Well, the upcoming polls will unearth the truth on the camp he should stick to, in a bid to make himself politically relevant.

My Own Observation

A number of factors will determine political survival of the Bullfighter now and in future. They include the strength of candidates being fronted by ODM, ANC, FORD-Kenya and other parties domiciled in Western Kenya. Also, his ability to convince the locals on why his leadership, track record as Ikolomani MP and 2022 agenda were better than those of his competitors would influence his success likelihood.
