While supporting women hustlers in Kilifi town on Friday with assorted foodstuffs, and blow-dry machines for hairdressers, Ruto also handed out half-dozen laptops to a select group of "educated" hustlers.
This brought to fruition his promise 8 years ago during the 2013 campaigns that the Jubilee government will provide each school-going child with a laptop. Ruto was countering claims by his political nemesis Raila Amollo Odinga who promised free education from Primary to University for all Kenyan children.
Just like the promise to pay health workers promptly and the other one about building world-class stadia in each county, the laptop promise did not materialize. Residents of Kilifi were therefore amused to see the DP keep his promise 8 years down the line, albeit in a slightly different way.
As pressure mounts towards a showdown for the presidential race candidates are making promises of goodies some of which they may not be able to realize.
The ODM Party leader Raila Odinga is on record as promising every poor household a stipend of Shs 6,000 each month in social security. Amani National Congress's Musalia Midavadi has promised to restructure the economy while Ruto's bottom-up economic approach promises absolute Nirvana.
Since independence some 50 years ago, every election circle politicians dream up some absurd piece of promise with the one about constructing roads, providing fresh water, and creating employment for youth being overused.
