National Assembly Petitioned To Look Into Fuel Prices Hike

The National Assembly have today been petitioned to look into the high prices of fuel by some responsible Kenyans.

Speaker Justin Muturi received a petition from Antony Manyara and John Wangai calling for immediate repeal of Section 13 of the Finance Act, 2018 in aim to address the sharp rise in prices of the fuel.

The two petitioners decried section 13 of the Finance Act, 2018 which amended section 5(2) of the VAT, 2013 that introduced an 8% VAT on petroleum and petroleum products which the government had stop taxing it.

The two petitioners, who proposed the review as draconian, cited the biting effects of the spike in fuel prices on taxpayers in our country.

Following this, Speaker Muturi has given the National Assembly’s Finance Committee 2weeks to look into the matter and report immediately to the House, as provided for in our Constitution.

“Honourable members, you will agree with me that this is a current matter which have to be addressed to the people. In addition to this Petition there is a similar Petition by the Member for Matungulu, Hon. Stephen Mule Mutinda, MP, I have received requests for Adjournment Motions from the MP for Dagoretti North, Hon. Simba Arati, MP and Nominated Membert and Hon. Wilson Sossion, MP looking for adjournment of the House so as to deliberate on this very issue,” Muturi noted to the MPs.
