Kenyan former President, and East African Community (EAC) Peace Facilitator, Uhuru Kenyatta, met with the leadership of the M23 rebel group in Mombasa today, to discuss ways of restoring peace in eastern Congo.
The meeting between Mr. Kenyatta and the M23 leadership was held at a secret location in Mombasa and was attended by various diplomats and representatives of the United Nations.
Mr. Kenyatta, who is also the African Union's special envoy for the Great Lakes region, is in Mombasa to facilitate talks between the M23 rebels and the Congolese government. He is keen to bring an end to the conflict in the Congo, which has been raging for more than two decades.
During the meeting, Mr. Kenyatta discussed the possibility of a negotiated settlement between the M23 and the Congolese government, as well as the need for a lasting peace in the region. He also urged the rebels to lay down their arms and participate in the peace process.
The M23 leadership, on its part, expressed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and its readiness to work with the Congolese government to bring about stability in the region.
