Kenya has Female Politicians who have greatly adapted and succeeded in national politics for decades now, Kenya being an Country is majorly chauvinistic, Politics and leadership as usual is dominated my Male gender.These two great and beautiful stood out in the 1980's and excelled in politics.
They have been in politics for decades now and they are still very strong and good strategists.These two are the most outstanding Female Politicians of all time.Her Excellency Governor Charity Kaluki Njilu and Hon.Martha Wangari Karua.
Governor Charity Kaluki Njilu-Kitui County
Charity Kaluki Njilu was born in the year 1952 in Mbooni, Makueni County.She studied at Alliance Girls High School for Secondary School Education.She thereafter worked in the Central Bank of Kenya as a secretary.She is a very successful entrepreneur, She also served as a director of plastic extrusion factory.
Charity Kaluki Njilu was among the three First female politician to be elected as governors in Kenya in 2017 general election, others were Ann Waiguru and Late Joyce Laboso, Charity was first elected into the office in year 1992 to represent Kitui Central Constituency in National Assembly.She was a member Democratic Party, she broke all norms and vied for Presidency in the 1997 general elections and finished fifth.She was the first woman to vie for Presidency in Kenya.
Charity Ngilu has served as a Minister Three times,Minister for Health, Minister of Water and Irrigation in Kibaki's Government and Later She was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Land, Housing and Urban Development in 2013 by Jubilee Government.She stepped down after various accussations in the year 2015.
She went ahead and won gubernatorial seat in Kitui County in the year 2017.She has been drumming support for the collapsed Building Bridges Initiatives led by Raila Odinga.She also banned Charcoal business in Kitui.
Despite the ravaging political waves, Charity has proved herself by remaining strong and firm in the arena.She is an epitome of strong women leadership in the country.
Martha Wangari Karua
Martha Wangari Karua was born in the year 1953, in present day Kirinyaga County.The Hon.Martha has established herself Kenyan political arena, she is a force to reckon.After her secondary Education Karua joined University Of Nairobi and graduated with a degree in Law,thereafter she served as Magistrate in various Courts e.g Nakuru, She was praised so much based on how she carried out her duty.
She started her own law firm in the year 1987, Martha Karua &Co.Advocates which she run until 2002.She was a great of KANU's government led by Late President Moi, she was an activist and human right defender.Martha was elected in 1992 general to represent Githunguri Constituency in Parliament. She was among the founders National Rainbow Coalition(NARC) which won the 2002 general election under Former President Mwai Kibaki ending the KANU regime which had lasted for decades.
Martha Karua has served in several Ministries including Minister of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional affairs.She also served as a Minister of Water Resources Management and Development.She was greatly in Kibaki's re-election which was marked with political chaos.Martha has been out of the Govenment since 2013, in year 2017 She contested for gubernatorial seat in Kirinyaga County and lost to Ann Mumbi Waiguru.Karua popularly known as the Iron Lady was a great critic of Building Bridges Initiative spearheaded by President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, at the end the initiative failed.Karua is currently strategizing her moves in the Mount Kenya region which is a darling in 2022 general elections.
These two ladies have proved beyond doubt that women as well can thrive and actually do well in Politics.They have faced alot of Changes during this course but they despair not.They have inspired many women to join Kenyan Politics.
