Raila has succeeded in winning over a number of Mt Kenya politicians, most allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who have began campaigning for him.
Among them are politicians who initially campaigned against him in 2013 and 2017, but who have now assembled behind him in readiness for 2022.
Details indicate that 25 of them have formed the Mt Kenya Focus Group and have been meeting area business groups every Thursday to endorse Raila.
They've been holding meetings with business groups to aid in Raila's campaigns in the area, the members including among others, Kieni MP Kanini Kega.
“We have a common agenda with them (Ushindi Kenya Network) in that we are all supporting Raila’s candidature, although we are driven in this by different interests. So we agreed on consolidating our activities to boost our campaign,” the vocal and youthful parliamentarian told The Standard.
Details also indicate that the group has realized that Raila only needs 30 percent of the Mt Kenya vote to win, but has decided to go for intense campaigns to protect themselves from losing their seats.
The members of the team have as a result, decided to go all out to ensure that the vote-for-raila movement is a strong one that apart from benefitting him, will ensure that they keep their seats as well.
"While 30 per cent, as is being rooted by some quarters as what Raila needs in the region may be enough for him to clinch the presidency, it will not be enough to secure us re-election. We need a majority of the vote,” Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, a member, said.
To fortify both themselves and Raila, they are working with established groups and people to woo residents, including holding town hall meetings.
Other members include Kiambu MP Jude Njomo, Peter Mwathi (Limuru) and Mary Wamaua of Maragua. It is believed that Uhuru is also in Raila's corner against his (Uhuru) deputy William Ruto.
