Right Honourable Moses Wetangular who is also the eighth speaker of the national assembly has delivered stern warnings to the Supreme Court over it's ruling on LGBTQ rights. The celebrated politician has maintained that Kenya is a deeply religious country or a public institution and for that reason the judiciary has an obligation to protect and uphold, preserve and uphold public morals. The speaker of the upper house warns that such ruling may lead to unintended and undesirable consequences.
This is after the Supreme Court of Kenya in a three judge bench recently declared that freedom of association is a human right and that in a functioning democracy such as Kenya, that right is inherent in everyone irrespective of whether the views they are promoting are popular or not.
The Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ rights has since been met by mixed reactions among the legal and religious categories. It is clearly evident that Kenya is a religious nation, right from the highest levels of government - the executive. The president himself has in recent months demonstrated his staunch Christian faith in many occasions. It is common knowledge views of the LGBTQ community are alien to the principles of the Christian faith.
In the coming days, it will be interesting to watch how the contest plays out between the religious executive supported by majority of Kenyans, and the judiciary whose rulings and judgments are based on the rule of law and not popular opinion.
