Nationally, voters are focused on, and are eagerly waiting for the presidential election which could be one of the most competitive Kenya has ever witnessed. However, the gubernatorial race is another competitive race across many counties. The fierce competition has been brought about majorly by the reduction of the races to more of coalition than party competitions. Most counties have two main candidates rivaling for the top seat, one from Kenya Kwanza and the other from Azimio la Umoja. There are also counties in which the competitiveness in the gubernatorial race have been impacted by failure of the coalitions to agree on one candidate for instance counties like Kiambu, Siaya and Mombasa.
However, as per my analysis of the latest opinion polls and ground support in various counties, I think Meru county has the most competitive gubernatorial race in this year's election. The race has attracted all the three incumbent county leaders, that is the incumbent governor, senator and women representative. The incumbent Governor Kiraitu Murungi is seeking re-election on his MBUS Party under the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Incumbent Senator Mithika Linturi is the UDA and Kenya Kwanza candidate. Meanwhile, incumbent Women Representative Kawira Mwangaza is vying as an independent candidate and is also giving the two gentlemen a run for their money. Also remember Meru County is one of the few Mount Kenya Counties that have been marked as battlegrounds for the two main Presidential candidates, Raila and Ruto. This alone makes it difficult for any of the candidates, except and perhaps maybe for the Independent candidate.

Going by recent polls, Meru County could have one of the most competitive gubernatorial race in August elections if not the most competitive as I think. Any of the three candidates have at some point been tipped as favourites to win the race ahead of the other. The most recent polls by Mizani Africa put UDA candidate Mithika Linturi ahead of Kawira Mwangaza and Kiraitu Murungi but with a less than 5% margins in each case. This means there could be a twist in the race and lead anytime, depending on how the three candidates handle their campaigns.

In Meru County, electorates will have to wait until the last vote is casted and counted to determined the winner not unless a situation comes through making one candidate steps down for the other. That case could bring about a walk over. Do you think Meru County has the most competitive gubernatorial race in this year's election? Share your thoughts.
