The Cost Of Running For Political Seat In Kenya Following Jalang'o Yesterday's Fundraiser

Comedian-cum radio host Felix Odiwour alias Jalang'o held a fundraiser yesterday at a hotel in Nairobi.

The main purpose of the fund was to help him raise the fund for his campaign as he bids to vie for Langata parliamentary seat in next year's poll.

The event managed to raise ksh10 Million as friends, business partners, colleagues came together to ensure it succeeded.

The comedian had originally revealed that his campaign budget was estimated at ksh 50 Million.

The cost of running a political for a political seat in Kenya is pretty expensive and can easily break a bank.

A recent report released by Westminster Foundation for democracy shows that it will cost an aspirant an average of Ksh35.5 Million to run for the senatorial seat.

On the other hand, Women representative campaigns will cost an average of ksh 22.8 Million.

The MP and the MCA seat are the least expensive with an average cost of ksh18.2 Million and Ksh3.1 Million respectively.

The report further showed that the higher the campaigns budget the better the chances of clinching the political seat.

Kenyan MPs are some of the highest-paid in the world where the gross salary for an MP is Ksh1.6 million.

This plus other allowances and benefits make the seat one of the most highly contested.
