Former president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta has been the peace envoy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He visited the country a few months ago to champion for peace in the Eastern part which had been taken over by the M23 rebels. In January 2023, he also met some M23 rebel leaders in Mombasa for more talks as the rebels had to let go of key towns under them.
However Uhuru's peace efforts have been questioned whether they will bear fruits after allegations emerged that the DRC government has hired European mercenaries from Russia to fight the M23 rebels. This has made Rwanda question why DRC is preparing for war yet there is ongoing peace efforts and theu are supposed to be committed to a truce.
Nation Africa news editor Allan Olingo has opined that the move by DRC to hire Russian mercenaries has rattled Rwanda and has questioned whether the Peace efforts led by former president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta will hold.He has also said that the presence of Russian mercenaries in Africa can be felt as the Wagner group in West Africa is accused of engaging them and there are allegations of them being involved in coups there.
"The Russians are everywhere. In West Africa, Wagner Group is accused of having a hand in the coups. In DRC, Moscow hand is showing. DRC is being accused of turning to Russians mercenaries to route out M23.Now, Rwanda is rattled. Will the Uhuru Kenyatta led peace efforts hold?" he wondered .
