The ODM’s Azimio la Umoja campaign has finally reached the Meru County as Raila Odinga continues lobbying for support ahead of 2022 presidential contest. Hours before attending the rally on Monday 2021-10-18 Raila spoke to the Meru residents through a vernacular station called Weru TV.
Raila whose candidature has not been officially announced finally broke silence about the possibility of taking a running mate from the Mount Kenya region. During an interview with a group of journalists from the region, Raila was asked about the rumours that he was planning to make a person from Mt. Kenya East a running mate.
“I have no problem making a person from Mt. Kenya east, Mount Kenya west or Ukambani my running mate. What I’m concerned about is to work with someone who can deliver to the citizens because sometime you can choose someone because of the region he comes from then he ends up not delivering as expected, said Raila.
The journalists further asked him to give his opinion about the ongoing rivalry between Meru’s two political giants Kiraitu Murungi and Peter Munya. Raila maintained that both of them are his friends and therefore he wants them to stop fighting and work together.
“I have worked with both of them, Kiraitu Murungi was my lawyer and we fought against Nyayo together. At that time they were with Ringera. I also worked with Munya together in parliament and I know his track record. He has been very competent wherever he works, asserted Raila.
The former Prime Minister also called for a ceasefire between the two leaders adding that they should work in harmony for the benefit of the people.
“I don’t want to see them quarrel because at the end of the day the government is large. One can work here (as governor) while another one can be given some work within the government. We are heading towards a critical phase and therefore it would not be good for our opponents to see us fight among ourselves,” said Odinga.
