IEBC Bows To UDA Party Pressure, Takes Bold Step After Ruto's Party Wrote Protest Letter on CJ Koome

IEBC has withdrawn from the Multi-Sectoral Committee on Electoral Preparedness.

According to a statement by the electoral body directed by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, the committee violates its independence. This comes a few days after UDA protested.

"After consultations and in-depth critical appraisal of the Terms of Reference (TOars) of the National Multi-sectoral Consultative Forum (NMSCF) on Election Preparedness; and the Technical Working Committee (TWC) of the NMSCF in Election Preparedness, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) would wish to respectfully withdraw from further engagement in activities of the said NMSCF and TWC," it said.

According to IEBC, several TORS of the NMScF and the TWC has the net effect of violating the Constitution by purporting to direct the commission on how to discharge its mandate contrary to Article 88 of the Constitution which clearly outlines the mandate of the commission and Article 249 of the Constitution.

The IEBC added that they only give instructions from the Constitution and the Law and not any other authority.
