Mandago Wants MCA Salaries Increased, Says Harambees is Part of Their Work

A contentious debate is expected on the coming days after Uasin Gishu Senator, Jackson Mandago, proposed a salary increment to the members of the county assembly (MCAs).

Speaking in the Senate chambers on Thursday afternoon, Mandago said that it's unfortunate for MCAs to earn peanuts and they are the leaders who interact most with the common citizens.

Mandago said that the lowest that MCA should get in terms of salary is Ksh 400,000. He stated that MCAs face a hectic time especially during the weekends when they are invited to attend several harambees.

"MCAs are the leaders who stay closest with the people. They interact with citizens on a daily basis. It is not fair for them to earn peanuts. The least amount that MCA should get as salary is Ksh 400,000," Mandago told the Senate.

The former governor made an interesting remark alluding that harambees is part of work for elected leaders.

"Nobody should tell me that harambees is not work of an elected leader. What do you expect an elected leader to do when invited for a school fees fundraising? I have been a Governor and I understand how MCAs suffer due to these weekly invitations to harambees," stated Mandago.

The UDA parliamentarian further called for the disbandment of the officials of the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC), citing unfairness. Mandago said that it was dishonest for SRC officials to add their salaries while at the same time propose for the reduction of politicians salaries.
