Raila and Ruto Suffers After LSK Rejects Proposed Constitutional Changes On Opposition Leader Slot

According to LSK, institutionalizing the office of Leader of the Opposition is unworkable because it interferes with the nation's concept of separation of powers.

LSK President Eric Theuri said the proposals are also unconstitutional during a press conference on Thursday. He criticized President Ruto's decision to take the parliamentary route rather than allowing a referendum.

Theuri said, “We call on Parliament and all right thinking Kenyans to resist the attempt to mutilate our Constitution to change the basic structure of our Constitution to accommodate an office that is not in consonance with the Presidential of governance that this country gave itself when it adopted the 2010 Constitution.”

Additionally, he suggested increasing the number of nominated MPs and requested that Parliament alter the Standing Orders to let Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) to directly respond to inquiries on the House floor as a form of supervision.

“LSK rejects Ruto’s proposed constitutional amendments, terms Opposition Leader slot impractical.”
