Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party is pushing to have the office of the Official Opposition Leader which could see the Constitution amended to create a powerful office that will keep the Government in check. The move by Azimio has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans and politicians.
Azimio La Umoja members want the Opposition Leader, Raila Odinga to have sweeping including annual address to Parliament, leeway to nominate persons to constitutional statutory Commission as well as receiving funds from the Government to enable oversight. UDA Party Chairman, Johnson Muthama has agreed with the latest proposal from Azimio La Umoja wing.
"I strongly believe that the founding fathers of our country got it right: power corrupts, & any time you have too much power concentrated in one place, it tends to get abused, so checks & balances are always needed. I fully support formation of office of the opposition leader." Johnson Muthama's statement.
According to Muthama, the founding fathers of Kenya reinstated that power corrupts and once power is concentrated in one place, it tends to be abused by those holding it hence the need to have the Office of Opposition Leader who will keep the Government in check. He has therefore called for the creation of Office of Opposition Leader which will be funded fully to help keep the Government in check. Despite being the Chairman of the ruling Party, Muthama is still pushing for accountability in Government.
