Musalia Mudavadi obliquely referred to Raila Odinga as dishonest while conceding in his speech that he's held extensive consultations with DP Ruto. It would appear that while Musalia was taking fellow OKA Principals in a circle, he was negotiating with Ruto.
A keen Dr. Ruto followed proceedings at Bomas of Kenya raising the hypothetical question of what would happen in case Ruto threw in the towel and decided to support Mudavadi for the presidency.
According to the Constitution of Kenya Ruto has served as Deputy President for two terms and may not vie for the same position a third time.
When Mudavadi brought up the integrity issue he received a standing ovation. Mudavadi is perhaps the least tainted of the presidential candidates having nominally been mentioned in only two known scams: Anglo-leasing and the Langata cemetery scandal.
The DP will effectively have scuttled the famous Handshake.
Mudavadi has been in politics longer than Ruto and served in numerous senior positions in government including as a vice president under Daniel Arap Moi for three months.
Dr. Ruto is known for his almost irascible ambition to lead Kenya but he also has a bigger stake to make sure that Raila Amollo Odinga does not become president. It is this latter reason that could drive him to take a backseat and propel Mudavadi as the new coalition preferred candidate.
Should he do that he would have saved a great number of politicians in the UDA Party camp? Ruto's diehard followers all seem to have pending economic crime cases.
People like Kirinyagah Governor Ann Waiguru, Migori Governor Zachariah Obado, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, John Walukhe, and others have ongoing court cases. It is now safe to assume that they cast their lot with Ruto to escape prosecution should Raila become president. Raila has recently repeated his earlier calls that criminal proceedings will be initiated on all suspects of economic crimes and those involved in post-election violence.
The DP is a crafty and ambitious politician who will stop at nothing to be in ultimate control of the government.
In that case, Ruto would be determined to elevate anyone whom he can control at State House. He would have saved his skin and that of many of his cohorts
