Raila Odinga and his Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has been dealt a major political blow after several important political leaders and players from the coastal region of Kenya ditched the coalition ahead of the 2022 polls scheduled for August 9th for Kenya Kwanza.
The defections were led by Hon Selina Maitha who initially was Suleiman Shahbal running mate in the Mombasa Gubernatorial Contest and Hon Jimmy Kahindi who is the current speaker of the Kilifi County Assembly. Welcoming the defectors, Deputy President William Ruto stated that the move by the leaders is a major boost to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance that is growing bigger and bigger as we edge closer to the upcoming General elections.
During the announcement at the official residence of the Deputy President in Karen Nairobi, the powerful coastal leaders were accompanied by UDA nominees for Mombasa Gubernatorial Seat, Kilifi Gubernatorial Seat and Nyali Parliamentary seat Hon Omar Hassan, Aish Jumwa and Mohammed Ali alias Jicho Pevu.
Deputy President William Ruto is trying keenly to consolidate the coastal region that controls and commands over 1. 6 million votes as per the data from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
"The Kenya Kwanza, Mombasa team has received a big boost. Former ODM governor aspirant Suleiman Shabhal's running mate Selina Maitha and his key lieutenants joined our team to strengthen our coalition grassroots support and bring genuine change to Mombasa. Welcome to the people's coalition. UDA governor candidate Hassan Omar and Nyali MP Mohammed Ali were present." stated Ruto.
" We welcome the speaker of Kilifi County Assembly Jimmy Kahindi (ODM/Azimio) to Kenya Kwanza. This is the coalition for the economic empowerment of ordinary Kenyans." he added.
The move by the coastal leaders to decamp to Kenya Kwanza also comes after Machakos Governor Hon Alfred Mutua and his Maendeleo Chap Chap party ditched Azimio and signed an alliance agreement with DP linked faction.
