The son of the late former Garissa Senator and BBI Steering Committee Chairperson Hon.Yusuf Haji is likely to be declared the senator elect of Garissa County any time soon after the withdrawal of his opponents from the race.Abdul Haji is vying for the seat on President Uhuru's Jubilee party ticket. Most leaders in his county, led by former National Assembly Majority Leader Hon.Aden Duale were pushing for his direct election as the senator in honour of the late Mzee Haji who commanded alot of respect in the county.
Ahmedrashid Koriyow of NARC,Suleiman Gedi of Thirdway Alliance and Khalid Ali of Liberty Party were Abdul's main opponents but they have so far written to IEBC withdrawing from the race. This leaves Abdul unopposed, something that might initiate his swearing in as the senator of Garissa, replacing his late father who was serving his second term.
The politics of Garissa county is largely controlled by community elders. It is through the intervenition the elders that Abdul's opponents have withdrawn from the race.
Abdul has also received the backing of almost all main political leaders in the country.KANU leader Hon.Gideon Moi endorsed Abdul in his visit to Garissa County for BBI Sensitization tour.DP Ruto also declared his support for Abdul recently after meeting the Garissa County leadership.
Abdul came to limelight through his dedicated efforts in rescueing the victims of Westgate Terror attack. Many Kenyans hailed him for his patriotic acts.
