Museveni's Son Muhoozi Clarifies That Nairobi Takeover Threat was a Joke

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has clarified his previous statements about taking over Nairobi in two weeks, stating that it was all a joke. In October 2022, Muhoozi had claimed that it would take him and his army less than two weeks to take control of Nairobi. In a series of tweets, Muhoozi made the statement in what many believed to be an apparent show of strength.

On Thursday, January 12, Muhoozi stated that he was surprised that while most people saw the joke in his words, others took it seriously. He went on to say that the truth will always win and that the East African Federation shall be realized.

In response to Muhoozi's statements, Uganda's President Kaguta Museveni issued a public apology to Kenya, asking for forgiveness for tweets by his son.

Museveni stated that it was not right for public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way in the internal affairs of brother countries. As a result of Muhoozi's remarks, Museveni promoted him to a general while removing him as commander of the army's land forces.
