Mt Kenya Foundation Aside as Name of Another Group of Mt Kenya Tycoons Influencing Polls Emerges

The Mt Kenya Foundation (MKF) is not the only group of tycoon businessmen from the Central Kenya region that seeks to decide who takes what seat during general elections, it has now emerged.

The MKF brings together eminent people from the mountain with a interest in presidental elections, with the team being fully in operation now in a bid to influence who succeeds President Uhuru Kenyatta.

But what many Kenyans might not know is that some of its members are also members of another similar group with interest in Murang'a politics, where a number of the MKF members hail from.

The group is known as Murang'a County Initiative (MCI), which, unlike MKF which claims to have succeeded in influencing presidential polls since 2007, according to reports, has repeatedly failed.

In 2013, for instance, the group, whose members include MKF Chair Peter Munga, tried to have Dr Moses Mwangi take the county gubernatorial seat, which he lost to Mwangi Wa Iria, a repeat of which happened during the recent 2017 elections.

Speaking a week ago, Wa Iria admitted that the group indeed vetted and endorsed a gubernatorial aspirant before he defeated it, saying that it is doing the same again for trying to decide the next President.

"I do not respect that forum and I can openly support those saying that the presidency will be given by Kenyans. Kenya is not their private company. Those who are attending the interviews should be employed in their companies," he told The Star.

"They have seen my posters but they do not think I am a good enough candidate to invite to their interviews. They did the same when I vied for the governorship in 2013 and 2017 and I defeated them," added the vocal county chief.

It's worth noting that the governor, who is serving his second term, is among those keen on succeeding Uhuru and is also among those who were not invited for the meetings the group recently hosted.

It is for these reason that he doesn't see eye to eye with Munga.
