Hon. Raila's ups and downs in KANU

"Strength of our democracy is the strength of political parties, political competition is healthy and strengthen our nation to prosperity."This are wise words from ODM party leader Raila Amollo Odinga when he was delivering a powerful speech at Bomas of Kenya ,during the KANU conference delegate meeting that was held today by the Chairman of KANU and also Baringo senator Gideon Moi. The former prime minister took podium and attention of in attendance to illuminate the historical moment he had during the KANU regime.

He said that KANU was the refuge for all political personnel of those time,he illustrated that ,when state of emergency was declared in 1952 by the then governor of the colonial Kenya, the only political party that was the hope and face of many Kenyans was banned and people refrain from forming any political based association. This lead to formation of district association like the Nairobi Africa National Congress in Nairobi, Maasai National Frontiers,Mombasa Association Democratic Union, this were region based association. He continued to say that after the ceasing of the state of emergency in 1961 KANU was formed in Kiambu at a place known as Kirigiti, were he acknowledged that the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was appointed president of the party while still in custody,James Gichuri was the acting president and his father the late Jaramogi Oginga was the vice president of KANU.

He narrated that multi-party democracy was introduced which pave way for the formation of Kenya Africa Democratic Union (KADU) headed by the late Ronald Ngala and the late former former president Daniel Moi. Where the first ever general election was held and KANU emerged victorious and refused to form the government until the released of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, this lead for the creation of coliation government between the two party. In 1963 another election was held and KANU won again, the following year Kenya was made a single party state by fact when KADU members decided to merger with the then ruling party. He encloses that he was a big team player during the attempted coup in 1982,when Moi's government was about to be overthrown. The attempted coup made the then president to declare Kenya as a one party state "dejure one party" by law not by fact.

Hon. Raila emotionally recall the tribulation he encountered when he was advocating for the repeal of section 2A of the constitution, but in 1991his effort bared fruit cause section 2A was abolished and multi-party democracy was a constitutional right. He went a head illustrating how he was once a secretary general of the oldest party in Kenya KANU by accepting cooperation with it from his party National Democratic party (NDP) in 1998. He agrees to merger his party with KANU in 2000 resulting in the formation of new KANU.

He finally concluded that he stepped out of KANU 2001,when Moi declared Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor "Uhuru tosha"this made him to form LDP and joined forces with NARC that lead to the fall of the KANU,the 38years of reigning.
