Choosing a presidential running mate is perhaps one of the issues which have proved difficult for many political parties and aspirants ahead of 2022 election however the ODM party has now revealed a raft of parameters that they will consider when choosing a running mate.
“When we announced that people who want to vie for presidency on an ODM ticket should present their requests, only two people showed up and now both Governor Oparanya and Joho have announced that they will support Raila. This means our preferred candidate is Raila and we must start looking for a running mate for him. We will consider gender issues, regional balance and interest,” said Sifuna.
He further reassured all aspirants that this time round the ODM party will conduct a free and fair nomination in all the posts and that no one should be misadvised that there will be favouritism.
“I would like to reiterate that as we speak right now, there is nobody who is having an ODM free ticket. In fact, even Raila Odinga, SG Sifuna and Chairman Mbadi have got no tickets. There maybe people who are already walking out there boasting about how they have tickets but that’s not true because we will do a free and fair nomination,” asserted Sifuna.
With the gender issue coming into play, does it mean that ODM is ready for a woman running mate? If yes then who will she be and from which region? In the last three elections Raila Odinga has always been deputised by a male running mate and perhaps it is time he make a change.
The Kenyan presidential race has seemingly given our women a cold shoulder when it comes choosing of presidential running mates. Perhaps Kalonzo Musyoka can take credit in this regard because he is the only key political figure who one made a woman his running decades ago and that was Mama Julia Ojiambo.
