Best Traditional New Year Celebration

The New Year Amnesty is a five-day holiday toward the end of Myanmar’s Traditional Buddhist year where pardon is extended by the government to a group of people for political offenses. In this year’s celebration, 23,184 prisoners were released from jails all over the country with many of them being those involved in the 1 February coup. The coup led to the arrest of more than 3100 people including doctors who have been in the front line of the nationwide civil disobedience movement that has left their hospitals unstaffed during the pandemic, social media influencers, and journalists who filmed and posted the coup.

Yesterday was the last day of the five-day celebration of the traditional Buddhist New Year holiday, which is marked by a visit to Buddhist Temples and rowdy throwing of water and partying in the streets.

In February, more than 800 prisoners were released from their prisons to free up space for the opponents of the military as well as cause chaos in society. After the release, the rebel group executed a man who had been freed during the Amnesty who was said to have raped a five-year-old girl.
