ODM Politician Finally Free After Court Found him Innocent

It is always a huge relief when one wins a case and is set free to continue with the normal work of nation building.

ODM politician can now smile after the court pronounced him innocent after undergoing a one year trial in a Mombasa court. Gideon Saburi, Kilifi Deputy Governor, was acquitted of all the charges against him in ruling made on Thursday 8.

Saburi was accused of willfully spreading COVID-19 in March 2019 after his trip from outside the country. The deputy governor was said to have interacted with groups of people knowingly and later infected them with Covid-19. He was also charged of skipping the government protocols which demanded every person coming from abroad to undergo a compulsory 14 days quarantine period.

Gideon was also said to have interacted with his boss, Governor Amason Kingi, who was also forced to isolate himself after Saburi tested positive for Covid-19. Luckily, Kingi tested negative after completing his isolation period.

Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti, dropped all the charges and ruled that the deputy governor did not interact with members of the public intentionally to infect them. The magistrate also added that Covid-19 had not been declared a contagious disease at the time of Saburi's implication.

His accusation of willingly exposing himself in public while suffering from an infectious disease without taking proper precautions was said to violate Section 28 (a) of the Public Health Act cap 242 Laws of Kenya.

This ruling came at a time when the country is experiencing more stringent measures as announced by the president a few weeks ago. Politicians were also served with a strong warning that no one will be spared if found contradicting the given guidelines.
