Auditor General Nancy Gathungu unearthed 192 bank accounts that belong to Baringo Governor, Stanley Kiptis. He is accused of fleecing his county dry by transferring huge amounts of money that is meant for different projects in the region.
Governor Kiptis who is top ally of Deputy President William Ruto, had been misusing funds worth ksh2 billion in 2018 - 2019 finacial year.
The report by Gathungu showed that the accounts, ran by the governor, were used to disburse funds to health facilities within the said county.
“The county executive operates 192 commercial bank accounts that it uses to disburse funds to dispensaries. However, the closing balances in the accounts have not been incorporated in the financial statements by the county.” She said as quoted from the report.
When the office of the AG sought clarification on the bank balances, none of their letters directed to him and his office were responded to, which raised eyebrows.
Last year March, Deputy Governor was impeached in what members of the county assembly termed as 'misuse of public funds and gross misconduct.'
Baringo is among the eight counties earmarked by AG after evidence gathered showed misappropriation of public funds. Others are Bomet, Nakuru, Kajiado, Laikipia, Kisumu, Nairobi and Kisii counties.
