Things that Might Work Against Raila in 2022 Elections

Some supporters of the former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga believe that this time he stands a better chance at winning the presidency. What they don’t know is that several things are at stake.

Despite the belief that Raila is being supported by the system, there are other things that can make Raila lose some supporters as we move closer to the elections. As Raila has now gotten the endorsement of the “system” there are other things that have come into play that could spoil the party for him.

Mr Odinga has been vying for the presidency for the past 25 years and this has made him lose several supporters over the years who do not see the need to vote him anymore. Most of these disgruntled supporters might think that just like other times, they are “wasting” their votes. This can work against Raila because the regional kingpins that once supported him have left to other camps or themselves want to be presidents.

Raila’s inability to keep close friends who have worked with him in the past can also give him difficult time. Many figures who were respected in Raila’s camp like Miguna Miguna have since left Mr Odinga and this is viewed among some voters as one who could abandon the voters when he ascends to presidency.

Lastly, can Mr Raila be trusted to leave the office when his term ends? Apart from Nelson Mandela, most freedom fighters turn to be bad dictators when they assume office. How is Mr Odinga planning to deal with this fear in some voters? Can he convince the people that he won’t be like other despots who have turned against the people that they once fought for? Failure to tackle some of these things are likely to cost Mr Odinga the presidency.
