Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o meets with President William Ruto at State House on December 7, 2022. Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has cleared the air on why he skipped the Kamukunji rally and instead held a State House meeting with President William Ruto.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga and elected politician Azimio held a rally on December 7, but the Kisumu governor was a top politician conspicuously missing from the event.
Later, pictures emerged of Kisumu Governor and Trade Secretary Musa Kuria sitting at State House. During the swearing in of Kisumu County Executive Committee Members, the governor said he needed Ruto's goodwill for the multi billion climate change and smart agriculture projects being implemented in his region.
“We discussed the Ksh30 billion United Green project coming to Kisumu and how we can leverage resources and synergies to mitigate the effects of climate change. The project will be funded by the British government, but implementation requires political goodwill from the Ruto government," the governor explained.
For years, Nyong'o has been a mainstay in Raila's campaign and a life member of the Orange Democratic Movement.
In 2007, he was instrumental in helping to form a pentagonal political group that sought to oust former president Mwai Kibaki.
In 2013, he became Kisumu's first senator using Raila's ODM party, and in 2017 he used the same party to win the state's gubernatorial contest.
Most of the other aspirants, in 2022, Nyong'o won a direct party ticket from ODM to defend the governor's seat .Azimio's top official's refusal to participate in the rally upset some of the politicians behind the event.
Sectarian politicians, led by Makadara MP George Aladwa, accused Raila of using him for personal gain, saying he should not seek re-election in 2022.
"People cannot leave Raila in his hour of need. Unfortunately, those seeking his confirmation could not attend the public meeting," he said.
