Barely a month after Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i bared in Parliament details of Deputy President Dr. William Samoei Ruto's monumental wealth a set of papers named the Pandora Papers have come out to detail offshore property belonging to the Kenyatta family.
President Uhuru is one among some 100 billionaires, 30 world leaders, and 300 public officials mentioned in the exposè.
The papers came out at an opportune moment when President Uhuru was on his way out of the country heading to the United States through Addis Ababa. In the papers, claims are made of one offshore account with some three billion shillings being part of 11 offshore firms in the vast financial empire that specifically touches on members of the Kenyatta family. It doesn't show that the property was acquired through illegalities.
Neither does it prove anywhere that wealth was amassed through cash flight involving Kenya government taxes. Nor was it property acquired strictly during Uhuru's presidency.
It's the kind of exposè that will excite sentiments for a while but will ultimately end up fizzling into nothing. The President responded that in fact whoever thought it would undermine the integrity of the Kenyatta family would have done Kenya a big favor as now a spotlight will be turned on the monumental wealth acquired through questionable means by several leaders.
"These reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe," said Uhuru, adding "The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness."
Uhuru's message was that the two billion in offshore accounts in Cayman Islands, Panama, and even a rental block in London is legitimately acquired wealth, how about a Pandora audit on the Deputy President for instance? If truth be told the Pandora thing has boomeranged. Whoever begun the Pandora thing might have expected to hit back at the President following the revelation that Ruto is not a Hustler but far much richer than he claims.
It has never been in doubt that the Kenyatta family is immensely rich.
