Today, the Democratic Party (DP) has endorsed National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi's presidential ambitions, and has invited him to run as the party's flagbearer in the 2022 General Election. The Party has said that it will support Mr Muturi's campaign despite the fact that he is not a member of the party. Following debates by delegates from Mt Kenya and Nairobi, party officials announced their choice of Mr Muturi in Nyeri on Wednesday. Despite launching his candidacy for Kenya's top post earlier this year, Mr Muturi has yet to choose a political party he will use as a vehicle to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, the party's announcement is a boost to the Speaker, who has been striving to gain traction in the Mt Kenya region amid deepening political tensions ahead of the election next year. Following his coronation and installation as Mt Kenya spokesperson, the Speaker expressed his desire in the presidency three months ago. The crowning of a group of Kikuyu elders caused a schism among central Kenyan authorities and widened the gap in Mt Kenya, pitting Mt Kenya East against Mt Kenya West.
