Why The Divisions In UDA May End Up Denying Ruto The Presidency: Opinion

William Ruto is among the top contenders for the presidential race. He will battle it with Raila Odinga who now is proving stronger each day. His newly formed party United Democratic Allaince will be his vehicle to power. A party which seemed united has started experiencing divisions months to the general elections. This is likely to cost him the presidency in 2022.

Ruto is paying dearly after losing close supporters in the Mount Kenya region. Moses Kuria and Mwangi Kiunjuri have moved out to form their own political outfits. This has been driven mainly by their differences with Rigathi Gachagua. The three leaders are said to have been eying the running mate position.

Currently Ruto has remained with people like Alice Wahome and Gachagua who cannot mobilize people well. They cannot compare to how Moses Kuria was influencial. This will make him lose a huge chunk of votes. This will be made worse with the entry of Raila Odinga who is being embraced in the region.

Nakuru county senator Susan Kihika wants a direct ticket to run for governor. Some officials in the party are pushing for nominations to enhance democracy. The leader feels entitled after standing together with Ruto against state humiliation. This will break them sooner than before.
