The second President of Kenya, His Excellency Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi was a teacher by profession before joining the world of politics.In the year 1955, Moi was picked to join the Legislative Council (Legco),he represented Rift Valley people.This was the colonial times parliament and this move introduced him to politics.
While in the council, he made a push for teachers to have a union that would fight for their rights, and thanks to his efforts, in 1957, the Kenya National of Teachers was born.
KNUT has for very many years been among the strongest workers' union not only in Kenya but Africa at large.Previously, teachers did not shy away from taking to the streets in efforts to express their grievances.
Though he resigned from the position he held, Nominated Member of Parliament, Hon Wilson Sossion will go down in the books of history as one of the vocal Secretary General that the union has ever had.The current SG is Collins Oyuu.
