In 2013, the Jubilee government headed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy Dr William Samoei Ruto gave some sweet promises to Kenyans before being elected to office. One of those promises was the nine new stadia which they intended to built across the country to promote sporting activities among Kenyan youths. Apart from the new stadiums, the duo also promised to refurbish out all the old stadiums to modern standards.
These promises seemed to be fading away during the Jubilee government first term in office. There was nothing being mentioned about them, but the government looks to have embarked back on these promises delivery. It has procured several stadia projects across the county. Also it has revived back the long stalled projects in almost all the counties in the country, in collaboration with county governments.
The Nyayo National Stadium has now been refurbished out to meet the international standards and it is now an all-seater modern stadium. Apart from Nyayo, there are other projects such as the City Stadium and other projects in, Makueni, Nyeri, Kiambu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Murang'a, Marsabit, Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Uasin Gishu counties.
In Meru, the government has upgraded Kinoru Stadium into a modern stadium at a whooping cost of Sh980 million, as reported by the Sports, Culture and Heritage ministry under CS Amina Mohammed. The project is almost ready with only artificial grasses remaining to be raised up to finalize the project. In Makueni County, the government is building Wote Stadium which has taken shape with 35% already completed. In Tharaka Nithi, Kirubia Stadium is more then 98% complete remaining with only less than a week to be finalized.
In Kiambu, there are two projects which has taken shape which are Karatu in Gatundu and Kirigiti that are set to cost a whooping cost of Sh630 million. In Elgeyo Marakwet, the government is also constructing a modern stadium at Kamariny and is reportedly on way to completion after 50% completion. All these projects are being funded by the jubilee government.
