Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi who is seeking to defend his seat come to the August general election has been handed a setback after his aspirations were cut short. The incumbent Westlands MP's nomination results to fly the ODM and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition ticket has been nullified.
This comes after a petitioner, Michael Gumo has gone to court to petition the direct nom nomination of Tim Wanyonyi since the aspirant, Michael Gumo had won the party primaries. Tim Wanyonyi had earlier contested for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, he later stepped down to allow Polycarp Igathe to be given a direct ticket through consensus.
Michael Gumo, the son of Fred Gumo had won the party primaries for the Westlands MP seat which had been held earlier last month which Tim Wanyonyi wasn't a participant. Michael Gumo went to stop the nomination citing favoritism and exploitation since he had spent millions of shillings campaigning for a bid to be the MP of the Constituency.
The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal said, ''We hereby allow the application filed by the petitioner on this matter, consequently we hereby nullify the nomination certificate issued to Tim Wanyonyi and order the ODM party to conduct a fresh nomination exercise for the Westlands MP within 72 hours.''
Michael Gumo said, ''I personally spent a lot of resources and time to marshall support for my bid. The results were publicly announced thus giving me the legitimate expectation that I would be issued with the certificate.''
The ODM Party responded and said, ''Journalists from various media houses have been calling to inquire about the party’s position on the verdict by the PPDT regarding the nomination of Tim Wanyonyi as the candidate for Westlands. The relevant organ of the party will meet and give direction in due course.''
