The political temperature in our country is heightening as we approach the general elections that will be held on 9th August this year. President Uhuru Kenyatta will not vie for the presidential seat as he will be concluding his two terms in office. His Deputy William Samoei Ruto expressed his interest to compete in the race a long time ago. Others who have declared to vie for the presidency include, the Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga, Stephane Kalonzo Musyoka(Wiper Party), Jimmy Wanjigi, and many others.
DP Ruto who is among the frontrunners has been involved in several campaigns in almost every corner of the country in the recent months. But one thing he has not told people is a person who he will choose as his running mate.
Many political analysts have been predicting that Ruto might go for his running mate from the Mt Kenya region. Yes, in my opinion, the Central province constitutes the highest number of voters and any political legend will try to get support from this area. He has backing by many Mt Kenya region legislators including Kiharu Constituency Member of Parliament Ndidi Nyoro, Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.
In my view, Ruto has a daunting task but he might settle on Muturi because of his experience in politics. At the same time, Muturi has worked extremely well under President Uhuru's regime since 2013 until now.Remember at some point in 2021 he(Muturi) was coronated by Kikuyu elders to be the spokesperson of their region. This means that he can entice residents to vote for Ruto to the last man.
Remember that the DP has been in politics for more than 20 years and he knows that if he chooses from outside that region he might lose a lot of votes.
