Kalonzo's Last Minute Presidential Bid Could Suffer Huge Blow After New Details Emerge

Wiper Democratic Movement Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has today parted ways with Raila Odinga led Azimio la Umoja Coalition. Kalonzo will now be vying for the presidential seat with his Wiper Party ticket, he announced. The former Vice President, who addressed the nation moments before Raila Odinga announced his running, revealed he had bolted out of the Azimio coalition after failure of the coalition to settle on him as Raila's running mate. Kalonzo also revealed that the Azimio Coalition had settled on Martha Karua as Raila's running mate even before Raila himself announced the same. Meanwhile Kalonzo has chosen Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli as his running mate.

New details have however emerged on why Kalonzo risks being barred from running in the Presidential race. According to popular lawyer Steve Ogolla, Kalonzo's presidential bid could suffer a blow as a result of the dictates of the laws governing political party Coalitions. Ogolla who is an advocate of the High Court, said Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper Party signed an agreement with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, and subsequently, nominated Raila Odinga as its Presidential candidate. This implies that Kalonzo's Wiper Party had already settled on Raila as its presidential flag bearer and therefore cannot field a second candidate for the same position.

But can Kalonzo vie as an independent candidate if by any chance he is barred from vying as a Wiper party candidate? The most appropriate answer is no, since resignation from political parties for candidates who opted to vie as independent candidates ended a few days after completion of party primaries.

The final verdict on the future of Kalonzo's last minute presidential bid however, still remains with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties. Kenyans and mostly Kalonzo Musyoka followers and supporters will therefore have to wait for official communication from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to learn their way forward in Kalonzo's late Presidential bid announcement
