Kericho Controversial MCA Rushes to Earn Degree As IEBC Sends a Big Threat to Most MCAs

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) latest announcement that the law requires aspirants for the six elective positions to be degree holders will take effect in the upcoming 2022 general elections sent a wave of fear and mixed reactions across all the 47 county assemblies.

This is because the majority of Kenyan MCAs both elected and nominated lack the document and the announcement now threatens to block them from defending their seats next year and this has sparked hot debates.

In Kericho, the news led to a more bitter exchange of words as it means that only a quarter of the current county legislators will qualify to contest for the lucrative positions. Controversial Kapsoit  MCA Paul Chirchir alias Tarimbo found himself at the centre of discussion as the vocal politician do not hold any degree.

His activeness in the already heated political arena led to the situation as his rival and critics took to various platforms to celebrate his impending disqualification. Tarimbo was the topic of discussion for the better part of Monday but this took another turn on Tuesday as the MCA came out to announce that he is in the process of completing a degree course and mocked his critics for celebrating his downfall too early.

The MCA through a Facebook post further shared a photo of himself reading in an unidentified Library and captioned it with a message that he pities those who are bashing him for not having the crucial document.

"Knowledge is Power, Power provides Information; Information leads to Education, Education breeds Wisdom; Wisdom is Liberation. Nasoma sana kwa bidii," Mr Chirchir wrote.

Although he did not reveal the institution he is attending, there is no doubt that Mr Chirchir is in the rush of earning a degree before the end of at least 350 days. His rivals went ahead to question the authenticity of the MCA's sudden education journey.
