The abrupt exit of Raila Odinga from AU has left more questions than answers. This exit came just weeks after president William Ruto visited Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, the headquarter of AU. As People Daily reports, there might have been a link between Ruto's presidency and Raila's exit. This is is according to the retired diplomat Prof David Kikaya.
According to the diplomat, envoys serve at the pleasure of the country's president. This is because the president is the the representative of the country in AU. Raila was nominated in 2018 by former president Uhuru Kenyatta, this was after the handshake.
For the same reason, as Uhuru is in Nigeria as elections observer for Africa, he has the blessings of president Ruto. Just the way he was appointed the special envoy between Ethiopia and DCR peace talks. This simply means that Raila's position in AU was determined by the president of Kenya.
