On October 17, 1945, in Gaza, Mozambique, Graca Machel entered the world. She is the spouse of two former world leaders, Samora Machel of Mozambique and Nelson Mandela of South Africa. She is unique among women in that she has held the office of First Lady in two different countries (South Africa and Mozambique) in the contemporary era.

Graca Machel was formerly married to Samora Machel, the country's first president, from 1975 until 1986. Graca Machel and the former president of Mozambique welcomed two children into the world. They have a daughter, Josina (born in 1976), and a boy, Malengane (born December 1978). Samora, the former president, passed away in 1986.

South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela became the second head of state to marry this well-known politician on July 18, 1998, in Johannesburg. Nelson Mandela turned 80 on July 18. Nelson Mandela, the celebrated African liberation leader, was serving as President of South Africa at the time.
