Raila's Surprise Move That Africans Will Remember For Many Years To Come

If he plays his cards well, ODM leader Raila Odinga will be addressing the United Nations General Assembly in 2022 as Kenya's fifth President.

This will be a momentous occasion for the man whose style of politics has baffled many. It is no surprise that he is managed to remain politically relevant for over three decades.

When some of his political peers have long disappeared into political oblivion by failing to cope with the ever changing rules of the game, the former Prime Minister continues to reinvent himself.

For Raila, sometimes going against the rules of the game has made him such a consequential figure in the history of African opposition politics.

For the man who has been in the game for some four decades, Raila has mastered the game of politics. When cornered, he retreats before reemerging even much stronger.

For this reason, the former Prime Minister will no doubt be ranked as of the greatest opposition leaders Africa has ever produced.

It was his 2018 move to embrace President Uhuru Kenyatta after the bitterly contested 2017 general election that has cemented his reputation as a master operator.

Before the handshake, Raila's political obituary had already been prepared. But to everyone's surprise, the ODM leader rose from his political grave to take full charge of the 2022 State House race.

Africa has produced some of the iconic opposition leaders like Etienne Tshisekedi of DRC. But in Raila, the continent has been privileged to have one of the greatest in the game.

The son of Kenya's first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga has redefined the role of an opposition leader. His move to embrace his bitter rival, President Kenyatta, is perhaps one of the greatest decisions an African opposition leader has ever made.

Most interestingly, Raila has won the backing of Uhuru in his quest to form the next Government after the 2022 general election.

Whether you hate or like him, Raila is a political genius. He has changed the way of playing politics especially in the African continent context.

Perhaps in future, the Raila style of politics will be taught in political science classes. After all, some of his political moves are very strange. And yes, the ODM leader is an African icon who will be remembered for many years to come. Whether he will finally fulfill his dream to become Kenya's fifth President is another story.
