Mudavadi Disagrees With Moses Kuria, Terms His Recent Utterances on Importation of Maize Wrong.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon Musalia Mudavadi has differed and disagreed with his Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment counterpart Hon Moses Kuria terming his recent utterances wrong. His disagreement comes after Kuria has been in the frontline urging farmers to sell their produce and if not the government will import maize from oversees despite the docket not falling in his Ministry.

In his message Mudavadi has said that Kuria is wrong on importation alleging the exercise of maize should be shelved until the Ministry of Agriculture led by Cabinet Secretary Hon Mithika Linturi buys and takes stock of the grain harvest in the country to establish if there will be a deficit.

The vocal and outspoken former Amani National Congress party leader maintained that the order to import maize should have originated from the Ministry of Agriculture and not the Trade, Investment, and Industry docket.

“The issue of importation maize should be guided by a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture to find out if there is a deficit of the grains, that is a policy that must be well canvassed. It is the Agriculture docket that will issue an importation order after looking at the food situation in the county,” said Mudavadi.

The remarks by CS Kuria on Saturday, November 26, ordering the farmers to release the maize ahead of a Cabinet meeting to be chaired by President William Ruto slated for Tuesday, November 29.

Even as the Cabinet sits Tuesday, farmers hope the government will hear their cry amid fears that allowing the importation of maize will badly injure their hopes for bountiful returns as it is likely to bring down the price of the commodity, which was cultivated under difficult circumstances when inputs were at an all time high.
