Deputy President William Ruto’s quest to infiltrate the Nyanza region ahead of next year’s elections is gaining momentum as allies in the region stepped up efforts to popularise him.
The leaders, most of who are considered ODM rebels after falling out with party leader Raila Odinga, are pushing for a generational change in the region’s leadership and a new economic path in their efforts to market the DP.
Here are two of the leaders who have vowed to do anything possible in the Luo region help add up to Ruto's votes as he seeks the top seat.
As ODM leader Raila Odinga was preparing for the 2013 presidential contest, one of the many lobby groups that supported his bid was Friends of Raila popularly known as FORA.
FORA was the platform through which Eliud Owalo plunged into national politics as a co-founder and secretary-general.
However Owalo fell out with Raila during the ODM primaries for Kibra at the 2017 elections and he is now championing for the hustler nation which is engineered by DP Ruto.
The same ex Raila aide just recently laid ground for DP Ruto's Migori tour and he is seen as one of those who will ensure the region which is a backyard to Raila, give the second in command maximum votes.
The Migori Governor Okoth Obado has now openly declared his support for the bottom-up economic model backed by Deputy President William Ruto.
Obado was first elected governor on the People's Democratic Party ticket in 2013 after he ditched ODM in the run-up to the polls.
He however returned to the Orange Democratic Movement on whose ticket he defended his seat in 2017.
Obado is being seen as Ruto’s point man in South Nyanza region and he will help the latter get maximum votes in the region said to be Raila's backyard.
