On Wednesday, April 20, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura was photographed in handcuffs. TWITTER
On Wednesday, April 20, Mutura was arrested at his City Hall office and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning.
Despite the fact that the reason for his detention has not been revealed, sources suggest that DCI investigators invaded his workplace and seized him.
Minutes thereafter, photos of him in handcuffs appeared on the internet.
Kenyans.co.ke spoke to Mutura moments before his arrest, and he confirmed that he would release a press statement later before disconnecting the phone.
Mutura switched his allegiance from the Jubilee party to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in April 2022, after announcing that he will not run for any political office.
Deputy President William Ruto welcomed him to his official mansion in Karen, where he pledged to work for the party.
"Nairobi County politicians, led by Speaker Benson Mutura, have announced that the Hustler Nation is their home and that Kenya Kwanza is the path to a better country." Ruto said at the moment, "Uchumi Kwanza."
He served as Makadara MP in the 2013 General Election on a TNA party ticket before becoming Speaker in August 2020. Five years later, he was defeated by ODM's George Aladwa for the seat.
After Beatrice Elachi announced her resignation due to protracted wranglings with members of the County Assembly, Mutura was elected speaker.
