Sonko has alleged that he is broke and he wants the Ksh 15 million from the courts, which he deposited as cash bail when he was charged with corruption.

In his application filed at the High Court, Sonko has said that he is unable to take care of his family needs as well as his children since his accounts were frozen.

"I am asking the courts to be allowed to deposit security in place of the cash bail to enable me access the money for purposes of attending to my health, paying school fee for my children, pay my lawyers and carter for my daily needs," Sonko said.

Sonko was arrested on 6th December 2019 when he was still the Nairobi County Governor over corruption allegations and accused of awarding tenders to his close aide and forging documents.
