A Kenya Police officer found himself in an unusual circumstance after Dr. Eric Mngola's declaration that President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta had died at State House Mombasa at around 2.30 am sparked off a series of events.

On August 22, 1978, Dr. Mngola, Kenyatta's doctor, informed Eliud Mahihu, the then Coast Provincial Commissioner, who was in Mombasa at State House, that Kenyatta had passed away. He then started alerting top officials.
Simmone Wambugu, a police inspector, was present at the Nairobi Police headquarters when Mahihu's unexpected call came in.
How was his body transported?
As soon as Wambugu brought Mahihu to him, the then-police commissioner Benard Hinga requested that a jet be ready to bring him to Mombasa.
Wambugu would oversee a sequence of instructions and commands before sunrise, beginning with this one.
One of the most amazing things that happened that day was when Mahihu called Wambugu and asked him to get in touch with the commander of the air force, Col. Dedan Gichuru.
